When to contact Customer Service
Customers who believe their bill is incorrect will need to contact us within 10 days of receiving their bill, following the instructions below. Or, pay the bill and contact us about the issue before they receive their next bill.
How to contact Customer Service about a billing issue

What to include when contacting Customer Service about a billing issue
- Full name (printed)
- Account number
- Current mailing address, if it is different from the address to which water and services are provided
- The address of the property where water service charges were incurred
- A telephone number where the customer can be reached between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday
- A brief summary of why the customer believes the current charges are incorrect, along with any materials or information that may help us resolve the issue.
Please do not include a letter with the bill and payment, since this will slow us down and keep us from resolving the issue quickly.
Yes! To determine monthly water usage, follow these steps:
- Write down the "read" number on the water meter on the first of the month.
- Write down the "read" number at the end of the month.
- Determine the monthly water consumption by taking the end-of-the-month number and subtracting the first-of-the-month number from it.

Customers who have received a higher than expected bill, please read below for a variety of tips and possible explanations.
The following may be reasons for high water usage:
* Leaking faucets, toilets, or other plumbing
* Guests in the home or extra entertaining/cooking
* Remodeling or other home renovations
* Washing cars or power washing
* Landscaping or garden work
* Check the number of days in this bill's billing period. Sometimes a billing period might cover 32 days, whereas other periods cover only 27 days.

* Review the bill for additional charges that could include the following:
A $5 late fee if a bill is not paid by the due date
A $25 fee for returned check or bank draft
A $35 fee when water service is cut off for non-payment

Chatham County Utilities has a leak adjustment policy that may give allow customers to receive an adjustment to their utility bill, depending upon the nature of the leak. Residents will need to complete a Leak Adjustment Form to receive bill adjustments.
If the leak is determined to be the customer's responsibility, they should repair the leak and submit documentation of the repair (including receipts for labor, supplies and equipment) to the Customer Service Office. Once the documentation has been reviewed and approved, the adjustment will be processed immediately.
The amount and time period to which the adjustment can be applied varies depending on the nature of the leak.. Customers who have questions can call Customer Service at 919-542-8270.
