On March 29, 2022, Vietnamese automotive manufacturer VinFast announced that it selected Chatham County, North Carolina, to build its first manufacturing facility in the United States. This $4 billion investment is the largest economic development project in North Carolina history and will create at least 7,500 jobs over five years (2023-2027). The VinFast plant will be located on the eastern side of the Triangle Innovation Point (TIP) site in Moncure. The Plan Moncure Small Area Plan is a priority project of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, which it initiated upon the announcement of the VinFast plant on the TIP site. The County’s 2017 Comprehensive Plan – Plan Chatham – provided that such a “small area plan” would be created upon the occupancy of the first major tenant at the TIP site. How did the VinFast project come about in Chatham County?

Over the past decade, Chatham County leaders, in conjunction with the Chatham County Economic Development Corporation, have been laying the groundwork and working to attract a large manufacturer to the Triangle Innovation Point (TIP) site in Moncure. For years, the goal has been to bring an auto manufacturer to benefit the community with high quality jobs. Many companies have shown interest in this site over the years for a wide variety of manufacturing operations. VinFast began its confidential interest in the site as “Project Blue” in December 2021. The project ultimately chose the TIP site at an announcement on March 29, 2022. The VinFast opportunity is even more enticing as the company is not only an auto manufacturer, as was the original goal for the site, but will build environmentally responsible electric vehicles that will help reduce the carbon footprint.

With access to everything that the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad regions have to offer, Chatham County, North Carolina, was the clear choice to locate the VinFast facility. The project will generate a positive economic impact from the industrial level down to small businesses and will help to greatly diversify Chatham County’s tax base.
Where will VinFast be located in Chatham County?

VinFast will be located on approximately 2,150 acres at the Triangle Innovation Point (TIP) site in Moncure, North Carolina, which is in southeastern Chatham County. The site is within 60 miles of the Research Triangle Park and Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Watch this video to learn more about the future home of VinFast.
How long will the project take and when is VinFast expected to open?

Planning and site development are currently underway. VinFast plans to break ground in the fall of 2022. The company aims to start manufacturing and production at the facility by 2024.
