Billing & Payments
The utility bill is a clear, concise statement of the customer's water and sewer usage. It includes detailed billing information, with a line-item breakdown of the charges, as well as payment options.
General Billing Information
Effective November 1, 2023, mail all water payments to:
Chatham County Utilities, PO Box 910, Pittsboro, NC 27312-0910
Utility bills are mailed on or about the 1st of every month and are due by the 25th of each month. The bill will become delinquent on the 26th day of each month, with a late fee of $5.00 applied. Chatham County Utilities will resume applying a $5.00 late fee on unpaid water bills July 26, 2023. Call 919-542-8270 or email watershop@chathamcountync.gov with any questions.
Customers are responsible for paying their water bills every month, even if the bill is not received. Billing information may be obtained from the County Utility Department.
No second notices will be sent. Bills are mailed every month. Chatham County Utilities is not responsible for the US Postal Service's failure or delay in the delivery of bills.
E-Notification Billing
Customers can sign up for electronic bill delivery by sending an email requesting enrollment in e-mail bill delivery. Bills can be received by e-mail only or both e-mail and paper.
Disconnection Information
Cut-off of service for non-payment of the bill with an outstanding balance of a minimum charge or more will occur if payments for the past due amount were not paid by the 15th of the following month. Should the 15th fall upon a weekend or holiday, cut-off of service shall take place on the following business day. A reconnection fee of $35.00 will be charged for services discontinued for non-payment.Service discontinued for nonpayment of bills will be restored only after the past due amount, the current month’s charges, and a re-connection service fee is paid for each meter reconnected. Service will be restore during normal working hours. Chatham County will not restore water service after office hours.

Chatham County Public Utilities & Water allows customers to pay their water bill by mail, in-person, depository box, automatic withdrawal, and online.
Mail In Your Payment

Customers may mail a check or money order to Chatham County Utilities in the envelope enclosed with their printed bill. Please allow plenty of time for receipt of US mail. Delay in postal delivery may result in a late fee assessment.
In-Person
Customers can also pay their bill by cash or check at the Chatham County Payment Center at 192 West Street, Pittsboro, NC 27312
Night Depository Box
To drop off payments after hours, use the secured night deposit mailbox located Chatham County Payment Center at 192 West Street, Pittsboro.
Automatic Bill Payment
For customer's convenience, Chatham County Utilities now offers automatic bill payment through Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), which automatically deducts money from their checking or savings account. Customers will still receive a billing statement with the amount to be drafted, but they won't have to write checks. Instead, the bank sends the funds for the customer. Bank drafts take place on the current charges bill due date, therefore, customers will want to make sure no past due charges are on the account when they sign-up in order to avoid a bill going unpaid. Customers may sign up for this option by submitting a Bank Draft Authorization Form online or download a PDF. They can also print and mail to PO Box 910, Pittsboro, NC 27312 or fax at 919-542-8282 with a copy of a voided check.
One Time Online Payment (credit or debit card)
Chatham County Utilities accepts VISA, Mastercard, American Express or Discover Card payments. Customers can pay online through the Citizen Self Service Portal or by calling 1-877-690-3729, key in jurisdiction code (4300) and select option #4. Payments made using a credit or debit card are charged a convenience fee of $4.00 by the payment processor. The maximum amount that can be charged is $1200.00 per card transaction. If customers need to make a payment over $1200.00, they will need to make multiple card transactions or pay by cash, check or money order.
Paying after Disconnection Notice
Past due amounts must be paid by the 15th of the month to avoid disconnection of water service. It is recommended to visit the Billing and Collection office at 192 West St, Pittsboro to pay with check or cash to avoid disconnection. The office is open from 8am until 5pm.
Credit or debit card payments for past due amounts made through the Citizen Self Service Portal or by calling 1-877-690-3729 take 2-3 business days to reach our office electronically. Water service will not be reconnected the date paid but upon receipt of the money electronically.
***Bill Pay through a bank (examples: Automatic Bill Pay, Mobile Bill Pay and Online Bill Pay) are not Chatham County Utilities payment options. These funds are not received by Chatham County electronically. Banks debit accounts but produce a paper check that is mailed to our office. Water service will be reconnected when the check payment is received. If using this option, the check must be mailed to PO Box 910, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
