The primary responsibility of the onsite wastewater monitoring program is to assure compliance with all existing onsite systems required to be inspected by the NC Laws and Rules for Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (18 E Rules) (15A NCAC 18E .1301(b). Certain types of systems are required to have floats, pumps, alarms, valves, and highly technical control panels which if not inspected could lead to a premature failure of the septic system. For this reason, the state sewage rules require these systems to be maintained and inspected on a routine basis . All onsite systems need to be maintained properly to maximize the system's life.

The Onsite Wastewater Monitoring Program also assists certified subsurface operators and homeowners of onsite wastewater systems.
