Listing for Business Personal Property January 1 - January 31, 2024

Business personal property must be listed for tax purposes annually. Business personal property includes supplies, machinery, equipment, computers, furniture, fixtures, airplanes, farm equipment, or any other equipment used to produce income.
All business personal property that is subject to taxation must be listed annually within the time period of January 1 through January 31. Listing extensions for business personal property will be accepted by mail, email, in person, or online via Business Personal Property Listing and Extension Request (available after January 1st 2024). All extension requests must be received in our office prior to the close of the regular listing period. Extensions will be granted until April 15. Failure to list within the required period will result in a penalty of 10% of the total tax levied.
If you listed with Chatham County in a previous year and have an active account, a listing form will be mailed to you each December at the address on record. Listing forms are available on our website.
Listing of 2024 business personal property began on January 1, 2024. Completed forms must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service no later than January 31, 2024. Property listings received after this date will have late penalties applied.
Listing for Personal Property January 1 - January 31, 2024
Personal property that is required to be listed includes: All types of watercraft, aircraft, items used for farming, vehicles that are not registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, etc.
North Carolina General Statute §105-285 requires that all property subject to taxation must be listed annually within the regular listing period of January 1 through January 31.

your real estate during the previous year (general maintenance not included)
A listing form is required if one or more of the following apply:
- You own unregistered, untagged vehicles which do not have an active North Carolina registration
- You own other personal property such as boats, boat motors, jet skis, airplanes, etc.
- You own a single-wide mobile home
- You have made changes to your real estate (general maintenance not included) during the previous year

Moving Permit
A mobile home moving permit is required from the Tax Office of the county the mobile home is currently located. If the mobile home being moved is currently located in Chatham County, please contact Amy Poe - Assessing Technician at

Set-up Permit
A mobile home set-up permit is required from the Permitting Department of the county where the home will be set up. Contact the Chatham County Central Permitting Department if the mobile home is being set up in Chatham County.
Tagged Vehicles: Visit the NC Division of Motor Vehicles for the following services:
- Payments
- Registration Renewal
- Registration Address Changes
- Statements of Taxes Paid
- Tag & Tax System explained
Motor Vehicle Tax Refund: Submit the MV Tax Refund Request Form if:
- A motor vehicle registered through DMV was sold or traded
- You moved out of county or state
Value, situs and taxability appeals must be filed with the tax office within 30 days of the billing date per NCGS 105-317.(c).
North Carolina General Statutes allow for certain types of property to be exempt from property taxes if they meet the requirements specified by the statutes. Some types of exempt property may include but are not limited to the following:
- Property used for religious purposes
- Property set aside for burial purposes
- Property used for educational, scientific, or literary purposes
- Property used for charitable purposes
- Property designated as historical by a local ordinance adopted by the Historical Property Commission and approved by the Board of Commissioners.
Refer to Article12 of NCGS Chapter 105 titled "Property Subject to Taxation" for specifics.
To apply for exemption, an application (AV-10) must be filed with the Assessor's Office during the regular listing period, which is the month of January.

State law now requires that certain trucking vehicles be listed with the Chatham County Tax Office. Any vehicle plate that meets the definition of an International Registration Plan (IRP) must be included on listing forms in January of each year, starting in January 2018.
The Listing Division office is located at 12 East St. Pittsboro, NC 27312 which is the government annex building on the south side of the Pittsboro circle. Ground floor.
