A report on community input for how to address the opioid epidemic in Chatham County during fiscal year 2023-2024 is now available.

Across the state and in Chatham County, injuries and deaths from opioid overdoses have been on the rise.

Across the state and in Chatham County, injuries and deaths from opioid overdoses have been on the rise.

Every day, about 10 North Carolinians die from opioid overdoses, while in Chatham County, one out of every 1000 residents visited the hospital or died because of opioids just in 2022 alone.  In 2021, the State of North Carolina became part of the National Opioid Settlement, a historic agreement that will provide desperately needed relief to communities impacted by opioids. The settlements resolve lawsuits over drug companies’ involvement in creating and fueling the opioid epidemic.

In 2022, Chatham County began receiving over $5 million in settlement funds from opioid pharmaceutical and distribution companies. This award will be disbursed in installments until 2038. The funds are being used to address the ongoing opioid crisis and support treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and other life-saving services. For more information, see the Chatham County fund payment schedule.

In December 2017, the Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Public Health Department, launched an effort to tackle mental health issues and prevent controlled substance abuse. This initiative established the Sheriff’s Prevention Partnership on Controlled Substances (SPPCS), a diverse group featuring public health officials, law enforcement, Chatham Drug Free, first responders, Chatham County Schools, treatment and recovery providers, as well as non-profit organizations, among others. The Partnership meets four times a year and holds monthly meetings for its four subcommittees, which focus on harm reduction, prevention, treatment access, and recovery support. These subcommittees plan and implement interventions, such as educating, distributing Naloxone, intervening early with youth at risk for substance use, providing evidence-based addiction treatment, and supporting individuals in recovery, as well as their families.

The following strategies were approved for funding for the 2024-2025 fiscal year by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on March 18, 2024, and they will be implemented by the SPPCS subcommittees on April 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025:

Collaborative Strategic Planning
Evidence-Based Addiction Treatment (Treatment Access Subcommittee)
Recovery Support Services (Recovery Support subcommittee)
Early Intervention (Prevention subcommittee)
Naloxone Distribution (Harm Reduction subcommittee)
Requests for Applications (RFAs) for Funding
