The Flu Vaccine
From October 1, 2023, through April 30, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 34-75 million people had flu illnesses, between 380,000 and 900,000 people were hospitalized, and between 17,000 and 100,000 people died from the flu in the United States (CDC).
FACT: The most effective way to protect yourself from the worst outcomes from the flu virus is to get vaccinated.
For the 2023–2024 season, CDC preliminarily estimates that influenza vaccination prevented between 7.4 million-15 million symptomatic illnesses, 3.6 million-7.4 million medical visits, 100,000-240,000 hospitalizations, and 3,500-34,000) deaths.
Certain groups of people are more likely to have severe complications from the flu, including persons 65 years and older; adults who have asthma, heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and other chronic conditions; and pregnant people. For these individuals, the flu vaccine is very important. (CDC)
