9-1-1 addressing in Chatham County is administered by Emergency Management in accordance with the House Numbering and Mobile Home Addressing Ordinance.  Emergency Operations is responsible for assigning addresses for the entire county except those areas which are exempt, such as the Town of Siler City, the Town of Cary, and certain developments.

9-1-1 Address Requirements

• A 9-1-1 address must be assigned before building permits can be issued. This is normally done after the percolation test (perc test) but can be issued sooner.
• A permanent address must be issued and posted before the final inspection can been completed.
• 9-1-1 addresses are issued driveway-to-driveway, assigning a new number for every 5.28 feet with the right hand side of the roadway being even and the left hand side being odd.  This standard method results in 1,000 potential numerical addresses for each road mile, and helps first responders locate calls for service.
• The 9-1-1 address must be displayed at a minimum height of four(4) inches in a contrasting color and be visible from the road or street from which it is addressed.
• If the addressed building is not visible from the roadway, the 9-1-1 address should be posted on the property near the roadway within a ten(10) foot radius of the entrance or driveway and must be visible from either direction of travel.

Road naming in Chatham County is administered by Emergency Management in accordance with the Chatham County Road Name Ordinance, Chatham County Mobile Home Ordinance, and Chatham County Subdivision Regulations.

Road Naming Requirements

• Private roads or driveways with 3 or more dwellings shall be named.
• Private roads and driveways, including mobile home park roads which require naming shall have the name reviewed by Emergency Operations.
• A petition is presented to the Board of Commissioners for approval. It must list the proposed road name, names of adjacent property owners, and the signatures of no less than 60% of the number of adjacent property owners along the road.

Petition for a New Road Name

A Road Naming Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Chatham County Emergency Operations with original signatures for a new road name to be assigned (A Microsoft^® Word formatted form can be downloaded here).

A petition requesting a new road name requires the following to process:

• A complete petition with original signatures
• Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
• Approval by the Board of Commissioners.

Petition to Rename an Existing Road

A Road Naming Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Emergency Operations with original signatures to change an existing road name (A Microsoft^® Word formatted form can be downloaded here).

Any petition requesting that an existing road name be changed requires the following to process:

• A complete petition with original signatures
• The road name being changed must have existed for 2 years;
• A check for $103.00 ($25.00 processing fee and $78.00 for road sign) made out to Chatham County;
• Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
• Approval by the Board of Commissioners.

ROAD NAMES FOR NEW SUBDIVISIONS

A Subdivision Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Chatham County Emergency Operations for road names in a new subdivision.

A petition requesting a new subdivision road name requires the following to process:

• A complete Subdivision Petition Form;
• Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
• Approval by the Board of Commissioners.

Installation and maintenance of streets signs on public roads and private roads off of state-maintained roads is administered in accordance with Chatham County Street Sign Ordinance and NC Department of Transportation guidelines.  Damaged, faded, or missing street signs should be reported to Emergency Management at 919-545-8163 or via e-mail.
