Road naming in Chatham County is administered by Emergency Management in accordance with the Chatham County Road Name Ordinance, Chatham County Mobile Home Ordinance, and Chatham County Subdivision Regulations.
Road Naming Requirements
- Private roads or driveways with 3 or more dwellings shall be named.
- Private roads and driveways, including mobile home park roads which require naming shall have the name reviewed by Emergency Operations.
- A petition is presented to the Board of Commissioners for approval. It must list the proposed road name, names of adjacent property owners, and the signatures of no less than 60% of the number of adjacent property owners along the road.
Petition for a New Road Name
A Road Naming Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Chatham County Emergency Operations with original signatures for a new road name to be assigned (A Microsoft® Word formatted form can be downloaded here).
A petition requesting a new road name requires the following to process:
- A complete petition with original signatures
- Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
- Approval by the Board of Commissioners.
Petition to Rename an Existing Road
A Road Naming Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Emergency Operations with original signatures to change an existing road name (A Microsoft® Word formatted form can be downloaded here).
Any petition requesting that an existing road name be changed requires the following to process:
- A complete petition with original signatures
- The road name being changed must have existed for 2 years;
- A check for $103.00 ($25.00 processing fee and $78.00 for road sign) made out to Chatham County;
- Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
- Approval by the Board of Commissioners.
ROAD NAMES FOR NEW SUBDIVISIONS
A Subdivision Petition Form must be completed and delivered to Chatham County Emergency Operations for road names in a new subdivision.
A petition requesting a new subdivision road name requires the following to process:
- A complete Subdivision Petition Form;
- Emergency Management staff review of the petition; and
- Approval by the Board of Commissioners.
