Transportation Planning in Chatham County is guided by federal legislation that requires states to carry out a Continuing, Cooperative, and Comprehensive statewide, multimodal, transportation planning process. 

A variety of plans, reports, and studies, are developed in cooperation with the Durham Chapel Hill Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO), the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and the Central Pines Rural Planning Organization (Central Pines RPO) and act as a regional framework for connectivity for local governments and NCDOT.
