Chatham County is committed to transparency and upholding the North Carolina public records laws, which include but are not limited to North Carolina General Statute Chapter 132.1. and General Statute 160A-168.. We are focused on providing an open exchange of information with our residents that is timely and accurate, which can be seen in our Public Records Policy.Reviewing and Requesting Public Records
Many Chatham County public records may be accessed via this website by using the search feature at top right or browsing through our Agendas and Minutes, the Planning Department’s webpages, or many other pages on the website.
Before filling out and submitting this form, please review a list of records handled by other departments or entities and not covered by this request form:
- Contact the Chatham County Sheriff's Office if you are requesting a copy of an incident report involving the Sheriff's Office or Animal Resources (919) 542-2811
- Contact the Clerk of Superior Court if you are requesting copies of any court documents (919) 545-3500
- Contact the Register of Deeds if you are requesting birth/death certificates, marriage licenses, plats, land records, deeds, and subdivision covenants (919) 542-8235
If you can’t find what you’re looking for on the website or you are not seeking records from one of the departments listed above, you may complete our online Public Records Request Form, which is transmitted to the Clerk to the Board of Commissioners, the custodian of the records. On the form, please be as specific as possible about the information you seek. It is helpful to include the date, title and/or topic of the records you’re interested in reviewing. The Clerk to the Board will work with the appropriate department(s) and staff to fulfill your request. All staff will work within the guidelines of our Public Records Policy when fulfilling your request. Chatham County will only produce public records that currently exist. It is not required to produce or create records that do not exist.
