Electronics from Households 

Televisions, computers, and some electronic equipment are banned from North Carolina landfills and therefore cannot be thrown away in the trash. Chatham County has an Electronics Recycling program available for those items that cannot be disposed of in a landfill. Electronics Recycling is available at the Collection Centers and Main Facility. Please note that the all items are not accepted at each location. See the items accepted lists below for details. 

Items Accepted in the Electronics Recycling Program at Collection Centers

The Collection Centers all accept the same items, but 9 centers have restrictions on the size and weight.

Asbury, Bennett, Crutchfield Crossroads, Goldston, Hadley, Harpers Crossroads, Marthas Chapel, Moncure, and Siler City accept the following items in the Electronics Recycling:

  • Computers, Monitors, & Laptops- screen must be less than 25 inches across
  • Televisions (flat and CRT units)- screen must be less than 25 inches across
  • Printers, Scanners, and Fax Machines
  • Cell Phones & Tablets
  • Hard Drives, Circuit Boards, Router, Modem, Cable and Satellite Boxes
  • Radio, Stereo, and Speakers
  • Surge Protectors

Restriction: We cannot accept ANY electronic item that is more than 50 pounds at these 9 Collection Centers listed above. They must go to the Bonlee, Cole Park, or Pittsboro Collection Centers or the Main Facility.

Bonlee, Cole Park, and Pittsboro accept the following items in the Electronics Recycling:

  • Computers, Monitors, & Laptops- any size or weight
  • Televisions (flat and CRT units)- any size or weight
  • Printers, Scanners, and Fax Machines
  • Cell Phones & Tablets
  • Hard Drives, Circuit Boards, Router, Modem, Cable and Satellite Boxes
  • Radio, Stereo, and Speakers
  • Surge Protectors

Items Accepted in the Electronics Recycling Program at the Main Facility

  • Computers, Monitors, & Laptops- any size or weight
  • Televisions (flat and CRT units)- any size or weight
  • Printers, Scanners, and Fax Machines
  • Cell Phones & Tablets
  • Hard Drives, Circuit Boards, Router, Modem, Cable and Satellite Boxes
  • Radio, Stereo, and Speakers
  • Surge Protectors

If residents with a current decal bring electronics to the Main Facility, there will be no charge. Residents with a current decal have paid the solid waste fee, which helps offset the cost of the Electronics Recycling program.  

Residents without a decal will be charged $5.00 per television, monitor, desktop computer, laptop computer, printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine. There will be no charge for smaller electronics accepted in our program, such as cell phone, routers, radios, and hard drives. 

The Main Facility is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm at 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro. We cannot guarantee we will have someone to help you unload your large electronics, if you need help unloading it you need to bring someone with you to help.

Items NOT Accepted in the Electronics Recycling Program

These items are not accepted in the Electronics Recycling program at the Collection Centers, Main Facility, or Household Hazardous Waste events. They should be placed in with your general trash unless otherwise noted.

  • Electronics from large businesses. Electronics from small businesses and non-profits are ONLY accepted at the Main Facility. See the "Electronics from Businesses" section below for more details. 
  • Peripheral computer items including keyboards, mouse, headphones, etc.
  • Cords, cables, and headphones
  • DVD, Blu-ray players, and VCRs
  • Gaming systems
  • CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, etc.
  • Cameras
  • Landline telephones
  • Appliances- if it is 90% metal it can go in the Scrap Metal Bin

Electronics from Businesses

Small businesses and non-profits can bring electronics to the Main Facility. There will be a charge of $5.00 per television, monitor, desktop computer, laptop computer, printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine. There will be no charge for smaller electronics accepted in our program, such as cell phones, routers, radios, and hard drives.

Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling reserves the right to refuse access to the electronics recycling program.

Businesses that are not eligible for our program need to contact an electronics recycler directly for recycling options. The NC Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service maintains a list of approved electronic recyclers. A comprehensive list of options can be found at www.p2pays.org.
