Chatham County Farmland Preservation Plan

Chatham  County now has a Farmland Protection Blueprint! This document describes short-term prioritization strategies for the 2025-2028 horizon and will be updated regularly to report accomplishments as well as establish new or continuing strategies for our local farmland preservation efforts.

This blueprint provides a current overview of Chatham’s agricultural statistics, a summary of Chatham County’s newly adopted Farmland Protection Plan (including surveys of over 300 members of Chatham County’s farming community and public), as well as findings from a current Cost of Community Services Study.

The blueprint establishes five priority recommendations and action steps:

  1. Develop sustained and committed funding for farmland preservation.
  2. Coordinate farmland protection outreach and education.
  3. Strengthen the Chatham County Farmland Preservation Program through policy development.
  4. Develop a strategic farmland preservation map.
  5. Emphasize equity and inclusion in farmland preservation initiatives.
