Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an evidence-based, early-intervention course that teaches participants about mental health and substance use challenges from the National Council of Wellbeing. The training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses using a 5-step Action Plan (ALGEE):
Assess for risk or harm
Listen nonjudgmentally
Give reassurance and information
Encourage appropriate professional help
Encourage self-help and other support strategies
The Chatham County Public Health Department offers Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings free of charge for community members and local organizations.
