Comprehensive Transportation Plan

A Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) has been developed for Chatham County. It is a long-range planning document that will assist the local government and its representatives in making transportation decisions over the next 25-30 years. It is a joint effort between Chatham County, the municipalities of Goldston, Pittsboro and Siler City, Cary, Central Pines RPO, the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro MPO and NCDOT. Visit the CTP webpage for more information about the CTP.

Purpose
The Planning Department staff works closely with a variety of organizations, citizens, and stakeholders to ensure Chatham County’s long term goal of creating a sustainable transportation system that offers access to various modes of transportation for people and goods is achieved.

Services

The Planning Department is involved with a variety of long range transportation plans and studies as well as provides support to the Transportation Advisory Committee. The Planning Department also works to coordinate with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Central Pines Rural Planning Organization, Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization, and other local transit agencies.

North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)

Unlike most states, county governments in North Carolina are not responsible for maintaining or building roads and bridges. The State of North Carolina through the N.C. Department of Transportation has responsibility of all primary and secondary roads, except for those that are privately-owned or municipal (town or city) roads. To see how a road gets built, visit the NCDOT website.
