Story time is a free service of the Chatham County Public Libraries. It is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to introduce children to books in a fun way. At Storytime, children develop important pre-literacy skills: talking, singing, listening, and playing. These activities provide a solid foundation for future development and learning.
All story time programs are designed for parents or caregivers to participate with their children.
Story Time is open to children of all ages, but is designed to be most appropriate for preschool aged children.
For Story Time days, times, and locations, please refer to our Calendar of Events.
Guidelines for Storytime
- Get involved: Please join in and show your child that story time is fun. The time to visit with other adults is before or after story time.
- Distractions: Arriving late is sometimes impossible to avoid, but please enter the room with as little disruption as possible.
- Those bad days: If your child becomes upset, or is having trouble focusing on the activities and creating a distraction, it’s okay to step out of the room to "regroup," then quietly return. We all have bad days every once in a while!
- Those insecure days: It’s okay if your child wants to observe instead of joining in. We completely understand that for some children this will be their first group learning experience, and that it may take a few visits for them to feel comfortable.
- Choosing a story time: Our story times are geared toward specific developmental levels: toddler (walkers through 36 months), and preschool (ages 3-5 years). If you are not sure which one to attend, please ask your librarian which one is best for your child.
- Don’t forget your books: An important part of the story time experience for children is checking out books to read or share at home.
