The Environmental Heath Division collects water samples for submission to the State Public Health Laboratory. Sample options are as follow: Bacteria, Inorganic, Nitrate, Iron Bacteria, Sulfur Bacteria, Vanadium, Herbicide, Hexavalent Chromium, Petroleum, Pesticide.

A Bacteriological Analysis, Inorganic Analysis, and Nitrate Analysis are required per State Law for all newly constructed wells within 30 days of the certificate of completion.

IMPORTANT: Prior to requesting an appointment for a new well water sample, the well head must be complete, the pump installed, connected to power, and all chlorine pumped from the well.

NOTE: Water samples can only be collected Monday through Wednesday

Application

Fees can be paid by check, cash, money order, or credit card and the application can now be submitted through the Online Portal.

WELL HEAD COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

Prior to Environmental Health completing the well approval the well head must meet requirements and a water sample must be collected:

Well Head Requirements:

Well driller must have submitted the GW1 (drilling log)
Grout must be in place to land surface
Top of casing at least 12" above land surface
Half-inch access port and vent
Watertight pipe and electrical entry
Watertight well seal or cap
Downturned threadless sampling tap

If a threaded tap is desired, a backflow preventer must be installed and
The threadless tap is still required

Permanently attached well contractor ID plate
Permanently attached pump installer ID plate

Water Sampling Requirements:

Chlorine must no longer be present in well
Well pump must be installed and electricity provided
Note: Chatham County Environmental Health can only collect water samples Monday through Wednesday; Please call to schedule the sampling visit.
