The Chatham County Public Health Department's Environmental Health Division permits and inspects establishments that prepare food or provide lodging for pay. These include restaurants, food stands, meat markets, delis, mobile food units, school cafeterias, elderly nutrition sites, temporary food stands, motels, bed and breakfast inns and institutions such as nursing homes. The establishments are inspected for safe food handling practices, infection control procedures and cleanliness.

Home-based Food Businesses are not regulated by Environmental Health, but are regulated by other agencies.
