Chatham County, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the regional transportation planning organizations are working together to plan for future transportation needs. Before identifying specific transportation projects for the future, these organizations need public input to help identify local transportation goals and to identify trends related to future population and employment growth.
Residents have several ways to provide input:
• A survey is available until May 31, 2012 through the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) website: www.dchcmpo.org
• A public workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, 2012 from 4-7 pm in the Agricultural Building Auditorium at 45 South Street in Pittsboro. It is a drop-in session, so residents are encouraged to come at any time during the three-hour period. Similar public workshops will also be held in Carrboro, Hillsborough and Durham.
• A public hearing will be held by the DCHC MPO Transportation Advisory Committee, which is comprised of local elected officials. The hearing is slated for Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 9 am in the second floor Committee Room of Durham City Hall at 101 City Hall Plaza. Persons with disabilities will be accommodated, but please request provisions at least 48 hours in advance.
• Questions or comments can be sent to Andy Henry, transportation planner with the DCHC MPO, by May 31,, 2012. He can be reached by email at andrew.henry@durhamnc.gov; by phone at (919) 560-4366, ext. 36419; or mail to City of Durham, Transportation Division, 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham, NC 27701.
The final product will be a Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) for Chatham County, which will include specific recommendations for new or improved highways and transit routes, as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities, for the next 30 years. It also will feature a Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) and CTP for the DCHC MPO, which covers the northeastern corner of Chatham as well as Orange and Durham counties.
The development of Chatham's CTP involves a partnership between the county and NCDOT, the Town of Goldston, the Town of Pittsboro, the Town of Siler City, the DCHC MPO and the Triangle Area Rural Planning Organization. The County's Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) is in charge of developing the CTP. The TAC meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month in Pittsboro and the public is welcome to attend and provide feedback on the plan or other transportation issues. For more information on the TAC, visit: www.chathamnc.org/Index.aspx?page=1324.
