Chatham Community Library will host “Word by Word: (Re)Building Trust in Science” with local science writer and author Julia Soplop on Thursday, September 12 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Holmes Family Meeting Room. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.
Soplop will preview her new, award-winning book, Information Crisis: How a Better Understanding of Science Can Help Us Face the Greatest Problems of Our Time, and discuss how reconsidering the ways we talk about science as a broad system of understanding can help us frame more accurate, nuanced, and meaningful health-related conversations.
Information Crisis, an essential read for non-scientists and scientists alike, offers both an analysis of this burgeoning crisis of (mis)information overload and a practical guide for navigating it. Soplop argues that becoming a more discerning and less vulnerable consumer, or producer, of health and science information is critical.
Whether you’re a librarian, social worker, health care provider, public health official, educator, or anyone else interested in bolstering your health communication game—including your science and media literacy—this talk is for you.
The first 50 registrants will receive a free copy of Information Crisis. Registration is available here: https://tinyurl.com/CCLwordbyword.
Julia Soplop is the recipient of two Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Awards and a Feathered Quill Book Award. Her work has appeared in numerous publications, including National Geographic, Summit Daily News, and Skiing. She also develops thought leadership for organizations that address issues of scientific, social, or technological concern. She holds a bachelor’s from Duke University and a master’s from the medical journalism program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Funding for this program is made available by the generous support of the Friends of the Chatham Community Library.
