Teen Health Connection presents a workshop series for parents of teens. Kris Hawkins, Parent Educator at Teen Health Connection, will share information and answer questions! Each workshop will take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in June, July, and August. You may attend one part only, but we recommend participating in all three!
- June 28: Active Parenting: Control vs Influence - Control means you have 100% power over the outcome. Influence means you have between 1% and 99% power over the outcome. Since the only person who can control a teen’s behavior is the teen, we will explore parenting from the position of influence, what behaviors support this method, and the benefits of putting this parenting approach into action.
- July 26: Active Parenting: Choice Within Limits - Choice is Power! When you give teens choices, you give them legitimate power. When you give orders, they will have to rebel to gain power. We will explore this idea of collaborative parenting and how giving simple choices can head off power struggles and prepare your teen to be a good decision maker.
- August 23: Active Parenting: Winning Cooperation -When we engage, consciously or unconsciously, in power struggles with our teen, we become an adversary in a “fight” for control and power. Adversaries oppose each other and a “fight” implies there a winner and a loser. We will explore why sharing power with our teens is necessary, how it teaches them the very important lesson of working cooperatively with others, and plays a vital role in developing and maintaining strong, positive parent-teen relationships where everyone wins.
