Virtual Film Screening: The R-Word

In recognition of Down Syndrome Awareness Month Chatham Community Library will host a virtual film screening of The R-Word (2020), beginning Thursday, October 14, and continuing through Thursday, October 21.

The R-Word, is a humanizing, purposeful, and deeply respectful look into the long-reaching history and lasting implications of derogatory language used to describe people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through captivating animation sequences, the personal narrative of four sibling stories, and the first-person accounts of self-advocates, viewers get an intimate and nuanced perspective of the challenges and triumphs of people living with an intellectual disability.

Film highlights and awards include:

  • SXSW EDU
  • National Down Syndrome Congress Film Fest
  • Heartland International Film Festival
  • Reel Abilities Film Festival, New York
  • Reel Abilities Film Festival, Pittsburgh
  • Reel Abilities Film Festival, New Jersey
