Mission: To ensure the wise use of our natural resources, soil, water, air, plants, and animals by providing technical and education services to land users. 

 

Chatham Farms Forever Day | December 5, 2024

Registration is now open for our first annual “Chatham Farms Forever Day,” a day-long farmland preservation workshop on Thursday, December 5, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Chatham Agriculture and Conference Center, 1192 US Hwy 64 W Business, Pittsboro, NC 27312. The workshop is free, but registration is required, and seating is limited. 

Participants can learn about conservation easements, farmland transition and estate planning, conservation management and cost-share opportunities, and more. Free lunch provided for all registrants. Major Programs and Services

Provides technical assistance on water quality issues related to soil conditions and animal waste;

  • Offers cost-share assistance to the farming community, when funds are available and when the farmers meet conservation and other eligibility criteria;
  • Promotes “Best Management Practices” to enhance and protect water quality; and
  • Offers educational programs on soil and water conservation to schools and the community.

Who We Are

Soil & Water Conservation Districts are political subdivisions of state government. There are 96 of them in North Carolina, covering the state’s 100 counties. They approve soil and water conservation plans, identify and plan local resource conservation work and coordinate the conservation efforts of federal and state agencies within the district.

Board Meetings

The Chatham Soil & Water Conservation District Board typically meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 pm in the conference room of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro. District Partners

The districts work closely with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Division of Soil and Water Conservation in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides soil conservation specialists to help landowners and land users. The division provides financial, technical and administrative support to the districts. Technical assistance can be provided to the landowner in varying capacities based on his/her needs.
